8 Essential Science Practices
SP 1: Representations & Models Use representations or models to represent scientific phenomena or solve problems. SP 2: Calculations Use Mathematic and Calculations appropriately. SP 3: Questioning Engage in scientific questioning to guide inquiry based investigations. SP 4: Collect Data Plan and implement data collection strategies in relation to specific scientific questions. | SP 5: Analyze Analyze and interpret evidence gathered from an investigation. SP 6: Justify Justify and explain data results and analysis through debate and argumentation. SP 7: Identify Errors Be able to identify and construct explanations of data collected and identify errors made & possible improvements in investigations. SP 8: Connect Connect concepts learned and discussed in class to society, technology and the environment. |
The using of 8 SPs
We learned about Unit 1 this week and used 8 essential science practices. We used graphs (x, y scatter) to show the result of the coffee test which is the use of the SP 1 representations. We also learn the new physics formula the Newton’s law of heating. This is the incorporation of SP 2 calculations. We start the unit by asking a question “should Mr. Doyle put milk to the coffee or leave it black.” The SP 3 questioning is the first step for an experiment and the SP 4 collect data is also important when we did the coffee test. We recorded the temperature of the two beakers’ of coffee every 3 min and they did the SP 5 analyze to them to get the result. Then we discussed the different result together to (SP 6) justify our result, if it was right or not. To see whether the prediction is validated or not. Later when I wrote the lab report I used the SP 7 identify errors and SP 8 connect to find the way to improve our experiment and talk about some relevant test I can do. Also thinking about how can the result of the coffee experiment be used in daily life and even be used in the science and environment area.
Reflection of Unit1
I used to think the reason milk coffee cooling slowly is the fat it has on the surface of the coffee from the milk, but now I know that is because the initial temperature of it is lower than the black one and follow the Newton’s law of heating.
I used to think learning Physics is going to remember a lot of mathematic formulas and do a lot of calculations, but now I know I can use calculator in the test which is amazing and will get the chart for formulas in the test.
I used to think the new calculator we bought is expensive and does not worth that prize, but now I know it is quite necessary and powerful. And I will take good care of it.
I used to think the physics in the U.S high school is going to be easy and learn the things we learned before, but now I know I can learn many new things here and they are interesting~
I used to think doing experiment is easy, but now I know it can be a big project, since I need to write the lab report in every detail and scientific ways. Especially after I saw the lad report for my AP Bio course that is really a big work!
