In the story the two protagonists are Mr. Croteau who came from working class and Ms. Woolner who born in rich family. The two of them in different social classes got marry and faced many problems in manners, food, child-rearing, gift-giving and how to spend vocations.
They found so many common interests at the very beginning of the relationship, but after they started dating, the differences between them stated to be seen as well. They have very different living habits and money makes a gap between the two people. Mr. Croteau needed to be care with his action and though and tried not to be looked like gold-digger to have relationship with a rich woman. Also, Ms. Woolner tried her best to work hard to put the thing in levels and gave money to his husband without hurting his dignity. In the relationship always the one who has more money and options become the one has more power so in this one, Ms. Woolner is the one who wears pants and which means Mr. Croteau changed more to get use to the upper class life style and listen more to his wife.
Both side of the family’s attitude to this couple is tender and peaceful. Mr. Croteau’s mum said,” Well, don’t hold that against her; she’s probably, very nice anyway.” On the other side, Ms. Woolner’s mum used to be embarrassed that Mr. Croteau is a car salesman and worried that Ms. Woolner was taking him on as a kind of do-good project. However, via the conversation between Mum and Mr. Croteau that she told him her thought about him honestly; I think they get along quite well with each other. Also Mr. Croteau mentioned that his wife’s family is very impressing and warm to him.
In addition, Mr. Croteau sometimes felt cannot understand the upper class people’s nuances. They do not speak directly and there are always many hidden rules in the work and nobody teaches that to him. When he went to visit his wife’s family, he got the same kind of feeling that they are kind and gentle to him all the time and too bred and nice to tell whether they really like him.
In summary the different between classes are quite obvious; you can feel it just by reading other’s experience. And we also realize the difference in daily life. Since people in different classes have completely different life style and requirements, it is not easy to get marry with someone in different class with you, especially when the woman is going to become the dominator in the relationship.
