The income inequality causes a series of health and social problem on the society. According to the data we analyzed this week and the presentation from my classmates, there is clearly a correlation between inequality and societal outcomes in rich developed countries over the world.
The difference of wealth distribution among different countries are a far cry, the top 20% can be more than 8 times richer than the poor, bottom 20%.,just like the USA and Singapore.
Firstly, in the health perspective, a high ranking of income inequality always leads to worse health conditions, such as, obesity, infants’ death, poor child well-being and mental illness. To the contrary, the countries have even distribution of wealth have better health conditions and less illness.
Then in the social perspective, higher ranking of income inequality often leads to unstable social orders and moral problems. For example, the teen-pregnancy numbers and drug using numbers are much higher in income inequality countries than in equally wealth distribution societies. There are more prisoners in the income inequality society. And students’ math and reading scores in the income unequal are also lower than those in equally rich countries. These data can indicate that the people in the income unequal society are more aggressive, depressed and unsatisfied to their life.
When we analyze the data among different countries, we were wondering whether is that the cultural difference affects the society situation rather than income inequality. However, when we saw the graph about the income inequality among the states in the US and the dropping out high school percent, there was also a very clean correlation between them. The high ranking of income inequality in the US leads to high percent of dropping out high school. In a word that cultural difference among different countries is not the main factor causes all these problems but the income inequality. In addition, we also looked at the relationship between health problems, life expectancy and UNIFEX child well-being, and the national income per person ($). And we found that there is no relationship between them. All the dots that represent different rich developed countries spread all over the plot. These two variables do not affect each other. Therefore, it is not the national income per person but the income inequality determines that health and social outcomes and causes all the difference among countries. During the researching and analyzing process, I noticed that the two extreme values among all the relatively rich developed countries, Japan and the USA. Japan has very low ranking of income inequality and always has less either health or social problems. The USA has high ranking of income inequality and has worse society situation and poor people health. Income inequality is obviously causing serious problems all over the world, people need to pay more attention on it or it will be too late to fix.
