In the book, Nick says that
“the one on my right was a colossal affair by any standard--it was a factual imitation of some Hotel de Ville in Normandy, with a tower on one side, spanking new under a thin beard of raw ivy, and a marble swimming pool, and more than forty acres of lawn and garden .it was Gatsby's mansion.” (pg6).
From his describe, Gatsby must be a very rich man and he wants to catch people’s attention on his mansion. He built his mansion by imitating a French Hotel, so he may used to live in France and loves the country very much. All the parts of his castle house is grandiose and luxuriant, the forty acres of lawn and garden, a marble swimming pool, a tower on one side. He is man who likes those heavy and magnificent things and wants to attract people’s attention. And since I do not know what kind of man Gatsby is, I cannot say if his mansion matches to his personality or not. The only thing I’m sure is that he is rich, unbelievable rich.
And then about Tom’s mansion, Nick says,
“Their house was even more elaborate than I expected, a cheerful red-and-white Georgian Colonial mansion, overlooking the bay. The lawn started at the beach and ran toward the front door for a quarter of a mile, jumping over sun-dials and brick walks and burning gardens--finally when it reached the house drifting up the side in bright vines as though from the momentum of its run. The front was broken by a line of French windows, glowing now with reflected gold and wide open to the warm windy afternoon” (pg8)
And
“Turning me around by one arm, he moved a broad flat hand along the front vista, including in its sweep a sunken Italian garden, a half acre of deep, pungent roses, and a snub-nosed motor-boat that bumped the tide offshore.” (pg9)
Also later in the conversation, Tom told Nick that this house belonged to Demaine, the oil man. The same as Gatsby’s mansion, Tom’s palace house is enormous and gorgeous as well, just as Nick says Tom’s house is very elaborate and has many foreign elements. It is hard to say what kind of man Tom is just by looking at his house, I only can know he is very, very rich. However, in the context, comparing with Nick’s narration about what kind of Tom is, I will think that this house’s style does not match Tom’s personality. He is a rude and mighty man, not a man who will love rose and French windows. He is not man who will spend time to appreciate the grace beauty of garden and sea.
